West Chester University was on the news because of the recent incident about a white student union meeting on campus. I was shocked when I heard about this!! Students (myself included) received an email from the campus climate intervention team that there was no such thing as a white student union and as stated in the email that "in investigating the situation, we have learned that the meeting was, in fact, designed to draw anti-racist allies together." I still can't believe people would do this! It left me with a bad feeling in my stomach, I'm happy I did not see any of the fliers around campus. It's a shame that this is the kind of publicity our university is getting. Thankfully it was stopped and we can hopefully move past this. It seems as if every time we make progress something pops up to make you realize how much farther we need to come. I'm curious how other students felt about this...

When I first learned about this during class, I was shocked, surprised, and speechless. I thought to myself that it is a shame how racism still continue today and it seems to be getting worst rather than better. This is a university with many different races and we should all try to get along since we do all go to the same school. I agree with Lainey that I'm glad that I didn't see this posters either because I would have been even more hurt because this is ridiculous.

i dont really know what to think about this since its not clear what the intentions were. supposedly the intentions were good and they were just trying to promote anti-racist things. But when you first hear about it, it seems like they were kind of just making a white student union in spite of the black student union so white people could have a group too. if the intentions weren't good then i obviously think its stupid and ridiculous to do something so dumb considering this campus is full of race and culture, but atleast it didn't hurt anyone or affect anyone too much

This also confused me a little. it seemed like the whole thing was to promote anti-racism, so i do not see the harm in that. i guess it was the fact that it was called "white student union" that made people assume it was a bad thing, instead of actually finding out what it was all about. but if that was the case, what are you supposed to title such a group? and if it was only made purely on the fact that there is a black student union and not a white one, then that is kind of childish. i wish i understood this better because i keep hearing different things about it.

ReplyDeleteI didn't see any of the posts anywhere, but I heard a lot about it. I admit, I was at the very least intrigued. If it was an actual attempt at a group, is it justifiable? We have groups that are directed to certain minorities. Should we exude the majority because they are the majority?
ReplyDeleteI also feel like this is something that will always exist on some level. That question is so prominent on whether or not it is appropriate to have a group geared towards majorities. Because of our culture, aren't we learning about this everyday? The "White Student Union", if legit, would probably be about white history and pride. Yet, in class, are we not learning about them already?
